Black Cap Brewing Company started with Greg Bentley, who spent years perfecting his craft in home kitchens before deciding Red Lion deserved a place to taste it too. What began as a small, hands-on brewpub grew into the taproom and kitchen you see today, but the goal never changed: handcrafted beer, made by someone who genuinely loves doing it.
Our taproom sits inside what was once the Red Lion Table Company, a furniture factory built in 1913. For generations, this building was filled with people doing exactly what we do now: building something by hand, board by board.
The factory ran right up until 2022, when the building was reimagined for its next chapter: brewery below, apartments above.
When we renovated, local craftsman Joel Pershing took old timber salvaged straight from this building and hand-built it into the tables you're sitting at today, board by board, grain by grain.
We reopened in December 2023, and every table in this taproom is a genuine piece of the original factory floor, still doing its job a hundred years later. Pull up a chair, and you're pulling up a piece of Red Lion's own history.
Today, Black Cap is a gathering spot built into a piece of Red Lion history: good beer, scratch-made pub food, and a taproom that fills up with neighbors most nights of the week. Come for trivia, stay for the brisket, either way, pull up a stool.
We didn't set out to open a brewery. We just wanted a place where good beer and good company were always on tap.
